Ocean Habitat Group Research Project
Team Ronzio voted on creating an ocean habitat outside of our classroom. For the rest of May, in small groups, students will be reseraching various plants and animals that live in the ocean. Groups are to find 4 facts about each living organism, describe where it lives, identify any adaptations, and make a model out of paper to hang in the hallway. Stay tuned for updates!
Living, non-living, and living but now dead...
As an introduction to our ecosystem unit, students had to collect 5-8 things from outside Paxton. We then groups our items into three different categories:
1) Living
2) Non-Living
3) Living, but now dead
1) Living
2) Non-Living
3) Living, but now dead
PANCAKES
In order for Team Ronzio to see a chemical change occur, we made pancakes on the Friday before spring break. We made pancakes from scratch and learned how to measure our ingredients correctly. All of the superstars were able to help mix our ingredients and of course taste our creation! Momma and Papa Ronz came to help cook our pancakes, be our mystery readers, and hang out with Team Ronzio.
ROOT BEER FLOATS!
In order to see a solid, liquid, and gas at the same time, Team Ronzio enjoyed root beer floats!
Solid = ice cream
Liquid = root beer soda
Gas = carbination!

CHANGES!!!!
Throughout the past couple of weeks, Team Ronzio has been studying matter and how matter can change. Students can identify, explain, and give examples of solids, liquids, gases, physical changes, and chemical changes. To put our understanding to use and gain more contextual knowledge, Ms. Ronzio set up six different changes stations.
Different Forms of Matter: Represented by Team Ronzio
SOLID = close molecules
LIQUID = the molecues are a little farther apart and are "flowy" (able to move freely)
GAS = the molecues are the farthest apart and are able to move about however they like
The Great Ice Race!
Students teamed up to see who could melt an ice cube the fastest. Groups had to make a plan, using what they know about changes in matter, and execute their plan as a team.
MIXTURES!
Students were to see if they could mix three solids together (corn, beans, and salt). After they made a mixture, Team Ronzio had to separate out the different solids into three different piles.
Student designed science experiments:
Below are photos of experiments that students developed, designed, and conducted in room 202. Come to the holiday open house to see the final publication of their lab reports!
Sedimentation Experiment
We were observing what happens to soil when it rains.
- EROSION -
a slow process when wind, water, and ice cause chances to the Earth
Dirt vs. Soil
We went outside to dig up dirt around Paxton. Then we observed and learned the difference between dirt and soil.
